Start with the right questions
Inviting someone into your parent's home is a big decision. Whether you're in Lake City or helping from out of state, a few direct questions will tell you a lot about any agency.

Screening and training
- Are caregivers employees, and are they background screened? In Florida, ask about Level 2 background screening.
- Is the agency licensed or registered with Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA)?
- What training do caregivers get before working with clients, especially for dementia care?
- Are caregivers CPR certified?
Matching and consistency
- Will we meet the caregiver before the first visit?
- How do you match personalities, not just schedules?
- How many different caregivers will my parent see in a typical month?
- What happens if we're not happy with the match?
Scheduling and backup
- What happens if a caregiver is sick or a car breaks down?
- Can you cover nights, weekends and holidays?
- How far will caregivers travel? Do you serve towns like Fort White or Lake Butler?
- Who do we call after hours?
Communication
Ask how you'll know what happened at each visit. Good agencies provide visit notes and a coordinator who actually answers the phone. If you live outside Columbia County, this matters even more.
Trust your instincts
Pay attention to how the first call feels. Were your questions answered plainly? Did anyone pressure you? At Lake City Home Care, the consultation is free and there's no obligation. Learn more about our team and how we work.
