What you're really paying for
It's usually the first question families ask, and it's a fair one. In-home care in Lake City is billed by the hour, and the total depends far more on how many hours you need than on anything else. A parent who needs a few mornings of help a week will pay a very different amount than someone who needs 24-hour care.

The five things that change the cost
- Hours per week. The biggest factor by far. Most families start with a few four-hour visits.
- Type of care. Companionship, personal care and dementia care require different skills and training.
- Time of day. Overnight, weekend and holiday shifts are scheduled differently.
- Shift length. Longer shifts and live-in care usually cost less per hour than short visits.
- Location. Homes farther from Lake City, like Branford or Jasper, are usually scheduled as longer visits.
How Columbia County families usually pay
Most families pay privately, sometimes with help from adult children. Long-term care insurance often covers in-home care, and some veterans and surviving spouses qualify for VA benefits. Florida Medicaid's long-term care program can also cover some in-home services for people who qualify. Medicare generally does not pay for ongoing non-medical care; we explain why in Does Medicare pay for home care in Florida?
Home care versus assisted living
For many families, a few days of help each week costs far less than moving to a facility, and your loved one stays in the home and community they know. As needs grow toward round-the-clock care, the comparison gets closer, and it's worth sitting down with real numbers.
Questions to ask any agency about price
- What's the hourly rate, and does it change for nights, weekends or holidays?
- Is there a minimum visit length or a minimum number of hours per week?
- Are there any sign-up, deposit or cancellation fees?
- How do you bill, and how often?
- Will you put everything in writing before care starts?
